PERRYVILLE -- Former businessman and law enforcement officer Ivo Edward Schumer, 81, of Perryville died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Perry County, son of Arnold August and Lorene Meister Schumer. He and M. Rita Hayden were married Sept. 2, 1937, at Brewer. She died Nov. 30, 1977. He and Katherine Monterusso were married Oct. 7, 1978, at Silver Lake.
Schumer had owned and operated several small businesses in Perry County. He had been an officer with Perryville Police Department, had worked at Perry County Hospital, had been director of Perry County Ambulance Service, and was chief deputy with Perry County Sheriff's Department.
He was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, and past grand knight with Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Edward Schumer of Perryville, Lee Schumer of St. Louis, Gerald Schumer of Kansas City; five daughters, Juanita Ponder of St. Louis, Jackie Parker and Cyncie Bauer of Florissant, Tamara McKinney of Lake Wylie, S.C., Debbie Reilly of Beaver Dam, Wis.; four stepdaughters, Katherine Drury and Nancy Klaus of Belleville, Ill., Brigette Peake of Cahokia, Ill., Pat Klaus of St. Louis; a stepson, Tony Monterusso of Fairview Heights, Ill.
He is also survived by two brothers, Melvin Schumer of Florida, Hilary Schumer of Belleville; three sisters, Sylvia Long of Ste. Genevieve, Sister Margie Schumer of St. Louis, Roberta Ryan of Elk Grove, Ill.; 29 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 27 stepgrandchildren; and 31 great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, a sister, and a grandson.
Parish prayers and rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church.
A Memorial Mass will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Kevin Fausz officiating. Burial will be private.
Miller Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
