Irene Chapman, 85, of Whitewater passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at her home. She was born Sept. 30. 1928, in Norwood, Ohio, daughter of Derill and Martha Hargis Phelps. She and William Chapman were married Sept. 20, 1946, in Somerset, Ky. He passed away Jan. 21, 2011...

Irene Chapman, 85, of Whitewater passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at her home.

She was born Sept. 30. 1928, in Norwood, Ohio, daughter of Derill and Martha Hargis Phelps. She and William Chapman were married Sept. 20, 1946, in Somerset, Ky. He passed away Jan. 21, 2011.

Irene was a true "homemaker" who loved her family, enjoyed cooking and serving family meals. She was a member of Whitewater Methodist Church, a former Sunday school teacher and member of the Methodist Women's Group.

Loving survivors include two sons, Alan (LaDonna) Chapman of De Soto, Mo., and Lonnie (Tina) Chapman of Whitewater; three daughters, Carolyn (Fred) Green of Scopus, Mo., Joanne (Randy) Lincoln of Whitewater and Phyllis (Mark) Snyder of Mechanicsville, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Ruth (the late William Jr.) Chapman of Barnhart, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob Phelps of Somerset, Ky.; and two sisters, Juanita Chapman of Jackson and Curtis Mae Dykes of Waynesburg, Ky.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, William Chapman Jr. (2010); an infant great-grandson, Shane S. Chapman; three brothers, Glen Phelps, Carroll Phelps and William Phelps; an infant brother, Newman Phelps; and two sisters, Irma Woodall and Vera Woodall.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Don Kuehle and Virgil Bunch officiating.

Interment will be in Zion United Methodist Cemetery in Gordonville.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Whitewater United Methodist Church.
