JACKSON -- Funeral for Howard L. McCain of Jackson will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8 p.m. today. An American Legion Honor Guard service will be held at 7.

McCain, 83, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at his home.

He was born March 13, 1916, at Neely's Landing, son of Pearl and Maggie Foster McCain. He and Louise Meyer were married Dec. 30, 1941, at St. Charles.

McCain farmed in the New Bethel area, drove a bus for Jackson R-2 Schools 18 years, and retired from Procter & Gamble in 1978.

He was a lifelong member of New Bethel Church, had been an adult Sunday School teacher, and former chairman and treasurer of the cemetery committee. He was a member of American Legion Post 158 in Jackson.

A veteran of World War II, he served from June 1942 to September 1945.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Linda Sides of Dexter; four sisters, Esther Ackman of Cape Girardeau, Irene Wiggins of Jackson, Virginia Bates of Pittsburgh, Pa., Pat McCabe of St. Louis; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
