BENTON, Mo. -- Hess Porter, 88, of Benton died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Morley, Mo., the son of W.C. BENTON, Mo. -- Hess Porter, 88, of Benton died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Morley, Mo., the son of W.C. Porter Sr. and Floy Elizabeth Randol Porter. He married Margaret Adams on Nov. 15, 1939, at Benton United Methodist Church in Benton.

He was a member of Benton United Methodist Church. In 1942, Mr. Porter was elected Scott County treasurer and served until he retired in 1982. He also served as mayor of Benton for many years and was a graduate of Benton High School.

Survivors include: his wife of Cape Girardeau; a son, David Porter of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Peggy James of Norman, Okla.; a grandson, Shannon Porter; and a great-grandson, Devon Porter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one infant sister.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. today at Ford & Sons Benton Chapel.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Benton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery in Morley, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
