ALTENBURG, Mo. -- Herbert R. Steffens, 91, of Altenburg passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at his home, with his family by his side. He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Perry County, son of Rudolph and Lydia Pilz Steffens. He and Thelma Schuessler were married June 6, 1948. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage...

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- Herbert R. Steffens, 91, of Altenburg passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at his home, with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Perry County, son of Rudolph and Lydia Pilz Steffens. He and Thelma Schuessler were married June 6, 1948. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage.

Herb was co-owner of Steffens Orchard and lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Herb was a loving man with an amazing faith, a positive and uplifting attitude. His greatest joy was his family and he will be missed by all.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Kathryn (Richard) Weber of Frohna, Missouri, Colleen (Tim) Mueller of Altenburg, Brenda (Rodney) Barber and Donna (Doyle) Lueders of Frohna; three brothers and a sister, Leo Steffens of Frohna, Eileen Gerler, Raymond Steffens and Floyd Steffens, all of St. Louis; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Norma Schuessler; and three brothers, Willard, Milton and Shirley Steffens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Young and Sons East Perry Chapel in Altenburg.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg, with the Rev. Mike Gallagher officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post 133 and the Navy Honors Team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church Beautification Fund or Saxony Lutheran High School.
