JONESBORO, Ill. -- Herbert Elkins, 79, of Jonesboro died Thurday, Aug. 20, 1992, at his daughter's home in Jonesboro.
He was born March 4, 1913, in Union County, the son of Columbus and Grace Harper Elkins. On April 29, 1940, he married Mary Ellen Newton in Jackson, Mo. She preceded him in death Dec. 3, 1979.
He was a retired construction worker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. He also was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge #111, the Local Operators Union #318, and was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, Billy Joe Elkins of Altamont, Ill; two daughters, Jean Ellen Eudy of Jonesboro and Mary Jane Thrailkill of Nashville, Ill.; a sister, Cybil Zilman of Warren, Mich.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. today at Norris and Son Funeral Home in Jonesboro, where funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Jerry Ford will officiate, and burial will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. There also will be a Masonic service conducted at 7 p.m. today by the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge.
