THEBES, Ill. -- Herbert F. Berndt, 92, of Thebes died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
He was born July 16, 1907, in West Chicago, son of Frank and Augusta Fischer Berndt. He and Gaynelle Rhyme were married June 21, 1936, in Rockford.
Berndt was a former mayor of Thebes. He was a former iron construction worker with American Barge Co., and retired from Allic Oil Terminal in Gale.
He was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church, member of Thebes Historical Society, and the Masonic lodge in Gilbertsville, Ky. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; and a sister, Elaine Berkes of North Fort Meyers, Fla.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms from 5-8 p.m. today, and Saturday at First Baptist Church from 11 a.m. until service time.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, with Carl D. Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
