Harvey Wingfield

SCHERTZ, Texas -- Harvey Eugene Wingfield, 68, of Schertz was gathered into the everlasting arms of the Lord Thursday, March 3, 2011. He passed very peacefully with his wife, sons, and grandchildren at his side.

He was born Jan. 2, 1943, in Cape Girardeau.

He was preceded by his parents, Clarence and Muriel Wingfield, and a brother, Charles Wingfield.

Left to remember his impact on their lives is his wife, Antoinette Wingfield; three sons, Michael, Kevin and John; grandchildren, Dalton, Shala, Joshua and Micah; sisters, Murlene and Linda; and a brother, Joe.

Harvey spent his youth on the family farm. He then joined the Air Force. He told his mother he would only be away four years. Yet life has many changes.

After his tour in Korea, he met the love of his life in Tucson, Ariz. Together they traveled the world, living in Alaska, South Carolina, Japan and Washington, D.C., then finally, the great state of Texas.

He began his service with the Security Police. He was fortunate to have an opportunity to enter computer science during the infancy of this field and be able to spend the next 45 years growing in his knowledge and expertise. He always believed he was privileged to have been able to achieve the rank of chief master sergeant. His professionalism and dedication to a service of excellence is evident by being awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with three Oak Clusters and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

After serving 27 years, he joined the civil service and felt blessed to be able to return to the same office and spend the next 18 years working with co-workers who became more than friends.

He was always eager to share with others the achievements of each of his sons. He was able to watch one son become a combat medic and paratrooper, and now is a safety manager for a drilling company in West Africa. He was proud to be able to watch another son play football for at the PAC-10 collegiate level, and then also become a safety adviser for a drilling company in Singapore. He was both supportive and encouraging to a third son who now works as a sports commentator for talk radio, as well as the online publication.

His love, wisdom, humor and kindness will be missed by those who loved him and those who shared his friendship.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Schertz Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.
