CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Harry H. Sutherland, 83, of Charleston died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Charleston Manor.

He was born April 23, 1917, in Mississippi County, Mo., son of Frank Russell and Margaret Adeline Farmer Sutherland. He and Maureen Cox were married Oct. 26, 1945.

Sutherland lived in Mississippi County all his life. He owned and operated Sutherland Oil Co. many years, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of Charleston United Methodist Church and its administrative board; past member of Charleston R-1 School Board; and past member of Lions and Kiwanis clubs.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 407 AF&AM, served as worshipful master in 1957 and 1979, and was secretary more than 17 years. Sutherland was district deputy grand master of the 50th Masonic District from 1980-85, was a member of Charleston Chapter 19 Royal Arch Masons and served as high priest in 1958. He was a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite Mason Valley of St. Louis, was a Shriner and member of Moolah Temple in St. Louis.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy Sutherland of Charleston; a brother, Richard Sutherland of Charleston; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and three brothers.

Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston from 5-8 p.m. Sunday. Masonic rites will be conducted at 6.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Charleston United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Hankinson officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
