CAIRO, Ill. -- Harry Thomas Stout, 79, of Cairo died at 7:35 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Harry was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Cairo, the son of the late Harry M. and Mary Eileen (Ryan) Stout.
Harry was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cairo, a third- and fourth-degree member of the Cairo Knights of Columbus Council No. 1027, where he was a past grand knight. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II where he earned the Bronze Star and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He retired as a letter carrier for the Cairo post office after 38 years of service, and he was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a sports announcer for 25 years for radio station WKRO in Cairo and a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Harry was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Harry is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann Stout, of Cairo; three sons and two daughters-in-law, the Rev. Thomas Stout of Red Bud, Ill., John L. and Carol Stout of Mounds, Ill., and Bill and Sheila Stout of Olmsted, Ill.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Helen and Jeff Wissinger of Cairo, Nan and Tom Hall of Centralia, Ill., and Peggy Berryhill of Cape Girardeau; one brother, Bro. John Stout, C.S.C. of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Eileen Karcher of Cairo and Elizabeth Turner of Cairo; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Visitation will be at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, where friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2001, and from 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2001.
A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cairo with The Most Rev. Wilton D. Gregory, S.L.D., Bishop of Belleville as presider, and the Rev. Father Tom Stout, Monsignor Bill McGhee and Rev. Father Jerome Fortenberry as celebrants.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Villa Ridge, Ill.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or the Disabled American Veterans in memory of Harry Thomas Stout.
