Harry Frank Bertrand, 91, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, April 24, 2017, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Jackson, the son of Frank C. and Zetta C. Essner Bertrand. He and Dorothy Huettig Bertrand were married Aug. 31, 1946, in Perryville, Missouri.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, enlisting after graduating from College High School in 1944. He was discharged in 1946. He was recalled back into the Marines in 1951, serving in Korea during the Korean War.

After being discharged from the Marine Corps, he was employed at Cape Frozen Food Lockers for several years before beginning employment with the C&W Electric Supply Co. This later became Cape Electrical Supply Inc., where he was employed as a salesman and sales manager for 39 years, retiring in 1988. He traveled in parts of Missouri and Illinois.

He was a life member and a past commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838, being named captain of the All-State Post Commanders Team for 1966-1967. He was state inspector for the Department of Missouri VFW in 1967-1968.

He was active in Boy Scout Troop 5 and in Post 3838's youth activities. He was also a life member of the Mason O. Yarbrough Marine Corps League Detachment 1081. He was a 70-plus year member of American Legion Post 63.

He enjoyed golf for many years at the Kimbeland Country Club and the Cape Jaycee Municipal Course. He was also a member of the SEMO Senior Golf Association.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau and the Men's Club of Trinity.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70-plus years, Dorothy Bertrand. Other survivors include a son, Michael (Kim) Bertrand of Friday Harbor, Washington; a daughter, Barbara (Mark) Bage of Ballwin, Missouri; five grandchildren, Emily (Jon) Wade of Jackson, Andrew (Bly) Bertrand of Jackson, Jonathan (Liisa) Bage of Helsinki, Finland, Brian (Shannon) Bage of Wildwood, Missouri, and David (fiance Steph) Bage of Medford, Oregon; a brother, John (Marge) Bertrand of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Lorraine Eaton of Cape Girardeau; four great-grandchildren, Kevin, Ben, Dominic and Graham; three sisters-in-law, Betty Bertrand of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Martha Bertrand and Carolyn Bertrand, both of Cape Girardeau; a brother-in-law, Fred Schmidt of Cape Girardeau; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Bertrand of Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harry Bertrand Jr.; four brothers, Robert Bertrand, Frank C. Bertrand, Ronald Bertrand and Bill Bertrand; three sisters, Shirley Schmidt, Georgia Haman and Charlotte Dunn; a sister-in-law, Helen Bertrand; and three brothers-in-law, Lewis Haman, Alvin Dunn and Frank Eaton.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Maske officiating. Burial will be at Hanover Lutheran Church Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
