Harold Wessel

Harold E. Wessel, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, after a brief stay in the Lutheran Home and Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Gordonville to Albert W. and Laura Hanschen Wessel. He and Eugenie Siebert were married June 18, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Harold served in the Army's Military Police Battalion in the Philippines immediately following World War II until he was discharged in 1947. After his service, he farmed the family farm in Cape Girardeau County his entire life.

He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church of Gordonville, where he served on the finance board and as an elder and also belonged to the Men's Club.

Harold's loving survivors include his wife of 65 years, Eugenie Wessel; four children, Dennis Wessel, Linda (Robert) Bohnsack and Kay (Adam) Kidd, all of Cape Girardeau, and Karen (Gary) Marklin of St. Louis; 13 grandchildren, Leah (Travis) Cagle, Eric (Melissa) Wessel, Myka Bohnsack, Lainie (Reid) Thomas, Luke (Tara) Marklin, Krista Marklin, Daniel Marklin and Blake, Ellie, Spencer, Bennett, Jolie and Kyah Kidd; and four great-grandchildren, Blaiklee and Kholbie Cagle, Owen Wessel and August Marklin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Dell Rehkopf, and his daughter-in-law, Susan Wessel.

Visitation will be from noon until service time at 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be given to the Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville.
