Harold Leon Scowden, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Life Care Center.
He was born May 11, 1921, in Cornwall, Mo., son of Leon J. and Eva Lou Wolfe Scowden. He and Dorothy Davis were married Sept. 21, 1943, at Leadwood, Mo.
Mr. Scowden grew up in Frankclay, Mo., and graduated from Mineral Area College. Serving in the U.S. Army, he was a captain in the Signal Corps and served in the Pacific Theater. He received a Bronze Star.
He was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. He taught and coached basketball in Norwood, Mo. He worked for Anderson Clark Wholesale Co. 38 years.
Mr. Scowden moved to Cape Girardeau in 1962. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Men, American Legion Post 63, and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was treasurer of the American Legion baseball team several years.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Pat Hagan of Cape Girardeau; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lura Scowden of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Mary Kassel of Indiana, Pa., Kathleen Black of Marionville, Mo.; three grandchildren, Shannon Hagan, Sean Hagan and wife Sarah, Katie Scowden; and a great-grandchild, Sophie Hagan.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. today.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Scott Moon officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with graveside rites by American Legion Post 63.
