Harold E. Makins, 88, of Jackson died Friday, May 2, 2014, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born June 6, 1925, son of Elmer and Hazel Geer Makins Sr. He married Dorothy Bolitho on April 26, 1946.
Makins served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served in the South Pacific, receiving a Purple Heart, Bronze Battle Star and a Good Conduct Medal.
He worked 21 years at Burroughs Corporation in Detroit, Lee-Rowan in Jackson and the Jackson Manor maintenance department, retiring in 1990. He served as a reserve sergeant for the Jackson Police Department.
Harold was a past Master of Excelsior Lodge 441 AF & AM in Jackson and a past Master of Lola Valley Lodge 583 AF&AM in Detroit. He was a 50-year member and PWP of Order of Eastern Star chapter 91 in Jackson.
Loving survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Judy Makins of Columbia, Missouri; son, Dann (Margaret) Makins of Jackson; two brothers, Chuck (Virginia) Makins of Pinckney, Michigan and Larry (Terry) Makins of San Diego; sister, Pat Cook of Howell, Michigan; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer Makins Jr.; and sister-in-law, Alice Makins.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral service will begin at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Rudolph officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Disabled American Veterans.
