Dr. Gwinn Marshall Lovel, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born June 14, 1938, in Hollis, Oklahoma, to Loyd Everett and Vinita Pearl Davidson Lovel.
He and Anne Marie Skelton were married Sept. 28, 1963, at Greenville, Mississippi.
Lovel served his country in the U.S. Air Force at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas.
He attended Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, taught a senior ladies Sunday-school class and sang in the choir many years.
He was a professor at Southeast Missouri State University and a member of the Midwest Sociological Society and the American Sociological Association. He helped with the college freshman-orientation program and volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Marie Lovel of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Jeffrey Lovel of Cape Girardeau and Michael Lovel of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Donna (Bruce) Powell of Virginia and Mary (Ralph) Belter of Sea Breeze, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Tom Sullenger officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.
