Gwenn Lee Freitag, DVM, 62, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, April 17, 2018, peacefully at her home.
She was born June 24, 1955, in St. Louis County, Missouri, to Earl Lewis and Marguerite Hilda Zeller Freitag.
Gwenn was a 1981 graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she received a doctorate in veterinary medicine.
She began her career as a veterinarian in Cape Girardeau, following graduation in 1981. Subsequently, she founded LaCroix Pet Hospital in 1989. She was fondly known to her clients as Dr. Gwenn. She had compassion for all the pets she cared for as well as their owners.
Dr. Freitag served on the board of directors of the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri as vice president.
Survivors include her father, Earl Freitag of St. Louis; a sister, Karen (Bill) Choate of Farmington, Missouri; a niece, Lauren Choate; and a special friend, Karen Fox of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marguerite Freitag, and a sister, Deborah Lynn Smallwood.
Gwenn was smart, caring, funny, kind and driven. She was a devoted friend to many and was known for selflessly helping others.
Hobbies she enjoyed were flower gardening, watching St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues games, beach vacations, swimming in her pool and observing wildlife.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
