Gus Coomer

Gus W. Coomer, 78, of Jackson went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born June 22, 1934, at Painton, Mo., to Gus and Eleanor Wondel Coomer.

Gus was a veteran of the U.S. Army, being inducted Feb. 13, 1957, and honorably discharged Jan. 30, 1959.

He and Shirley J. Nagel were married Dec. 30, 1961. The two were lovingly married 50 years and had three children.

Survivors include his loving wife, Shirley; two sons, Jeff (Becky) Coomer of Wentzville, Mo., Mike (Denise) Coomer of St. Charles, Mo.; and a daughter, Shirl (Tim) Burton of Broomfield, Colo. He was also grandfather to four grandchildren, Travis Coomer, Samantha Coomer, Alison Coomer and Cole Burton; dear brother of D'orsay Winchester of Advance, Mo.; four brothers, Elroy Coomer of St. Peters, Mo., Nelson Coomer of Joshua, Texas, Lurwin Coomer of Memphis, Tenn., and Verl Coomer of Lumberton, Miss.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gus was a crane and heavy equipment operator many years with Penzel Construction Co. in Jackson. He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 513 more than 50 years, and was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Martin officiating. Interment will be in Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be given to Saxony Lutheran High School.
