Grace Helen Proffer, 89, of Jackson died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, surrounded by her family.

Grace was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Millersville, daughter of Ben F. and Jeffie A. Davis Davenport. She spent her youth in the Millersville and Crump area.

She married Marvin F. Proffer on March 5, 1938. He died April 15, 1999. They were the parents of Nora Lee (Orville) Ahrens of Jackson, Mary Lou (Milton) Schlimpert of Altenburg, Mo., Glenda Mae (Ronald) Fornkahl of Cape Girardeau and Marvin Keith (Joyce) Proffer of DeSoto, Mo.

Grace and Marvin lived most of their married lives in Jackson. Grace was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was always there for her children, helping in any way she could. Her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life. She has 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren who will miss her.

She was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jewel Davenport and Hazel Proffer; and four brothers, Carl, Roy, Ray and Troy Davenport.

Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating.

Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to Emmanuel United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
