Gordon Herbert Varney, 69, of Jackson died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born April 6, 1943, in St. Louis, to Clara Varney, who died in childbirth. Gordon was adopted and raised by his uncle, George Herbert Varney.
Varney graduated from Roosevelt High School in St. Louis and from Metro Business College.
He and Wanda Lee Holloway were married Dec. 13, 1960, in St. Louis. She died July 14, 2011.
Varney worked for the Bollinger County and Cape Girardeau County sheriffs' departments. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church near Pocahontas.
Survivors include two sons, Scott (Lori) Varney of Benton, Mo., and Gordon H. Varney Jr. of Rowlett, Texas; three daughters, Cheryl (Eddie) Woods and Kathy (Allen) Wall of Jackson and Amanda Toll of Neelys Landing; 12 grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Trever, Edward, Chris, Timothy, Charlie, Emma, Tim, Megan, Jake and Nathan; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and wife.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Friday at New Bethel Baptist Church.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. John Rhodes officiating.
Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
