CHARLESTON -- Golda Opal Staples, 80, of Charleston died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1991, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born April 19, 1911, at Whiting, the daughter of Thomas DePorter and Virginia Elizabeth Jones Pope.

On Dec. 22, 1931, she married George Duncan Staples Jr., who survives of the home.

She lived in Mississippi County her entire life, where she taught school until her retirement in 1960. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston and honorary member and past president of the Katherine Boone Music Club. She also was an avid fisherman.

Other survivors include a son, George Galen Staples of Naperville, Ill.; a daughter, Martha Luanne Hill of Charleston; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, where funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Gerald Collier will officiate, and burial will be in the Smith-Griggs Cemetery near Wyatt.
