JACKSON -- Gilbert E. Sewing Jr., 79, of Jackson, died Friday, Nov. 25, 1994, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born March 27, 1915, in Arnsberg, son of Rudolph and Catherine Dickmann Sewing. He and Irene Statler were married Nov. 7, 1936.
Sewing worked 16 years at International Shoe Co. From 1953-80 he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, first as a city carrier, and then a carrier on Route 4.
He was a member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau, commander of Disabled American Veterans, charter member of American Legion Honor Guard, and past commander of the American Legion Post in Jackson. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and had served in numerous capacities.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Gilbert E. Sewing Jr. of Ballwin; two daughters, Kathryn Scharenborg and Martha Sides of Jackson; a sister, Evelyn Long of Jackson, and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. today. An American Legion Honor Guard service will be held at 7:30.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Church, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
