Gilbert Alexander Gearing, 89, of Elco, Ill., died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Washington County Hospital in Nashville, Ill.

He was born Feb. 10, 1911, at Elco, son of George Alexander and Frona Dickerson Gearing. He married Mildred Durham, and she died March 5, 1974.

Gearing was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a retired truck driver from the Unimin Minerals Plant in Elco and was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 in Anna, Ill.

Survivors include a daughter and a son, Diane Dailey and David Gearing, both of Bethalto, Ill.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones Funeral Home in Tamms, Ill.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Lacie Betts will officiate, with burial and full military rites in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola, Ill.
