CHAFFEE, Mo. -- George Dewey "Dude" Horman, 79, at Chaffee passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 12, 1923, at Bloymeyer, Mo., to the late Fred and Mayme Griffin Horman. He entered the United States Army on Oct. 25, 1944, during World War II. He was honorably discharged Aug. 30, 1945...

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- George Dewey "Dude" Horman, 79, at Chaffee passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 12, 1923, at Bloymeyer, Mo., to the late Fred and Mayme Griffin Horman. He entered the United States Army on Oct. 25, 1944, during World War II. He was honorably discharged Aug. 30, 1945.

He married Bonnie Mae Naugle on Nov. 1, 1945, in Chaffee. George was a member of the Chaffee American Legion Post 389 and a lifetime member of the Cape Girardeau County Disabled Veterans Chapter 16.

He was also a member of the Chaffee Country CB'ers Club. George served as president of the SEMO South Jr. Babe Ruth Baseball League, coaching numerous teams in the Chaffee youth baseball program. He also played for the Old Chaffee Red Wings.

George was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Chaffee Special Road District, retiring in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Christine Jones and Ellen and Joe Piper of Chaffee; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Ray and Nancy Horman of Puyallup, Wa., Jerry and Jeri Horman of Grayslake, Ill., Delmar and Betty Horman of Cape Girardeau, Delbert and Sue Horman of Lebanon, Mo., and Dennis Horman and Tim Tanz of St. Louis; 14 grandchildren, one being Chet Horman who he raised; two stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, soon to be born.

Also surviving are four brothers, Alfred "Butch" Horman of St. Louis, Ben Horman of Glennon, Mo., Bob Horman of Chaffee, Jim Horman of Forest City, Ark.; four sisters, Alice "Sis" Kiefer of Chaffee, Aileen Fielne of Lamar, Mo., Dorothy Horman of Cape Girardeau and Ira Eftink of Glennon.

He is also survived by an aunt, Virgie Shackles of Chaffee and his beloved dog, Mitzie.

He was preceded in detah by a granddaughter, Kristy Marie Horman; a grandson, William Michael Kitchen; a son-in-law, Ben Jones; a sister, Mary Jane Horman and a brother Larry Horman.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee with the Rev. Ralph Duffner officiating. Burial will be in the Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee with full military honors.

Any donations should be made to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, in memory of his granddaughter, Kristy.
