George Bert "Bud" Cannon, 75, of Wappapello, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at his home.
Mr. Cannon was born Nov. 20, 1938, in St. Louis to George Marion Cannon and Ethel Lorraine Rhodes. He was the owner and operator of Cannon Trucking Company and Cannon Logistics LLC and worked in the transportation and trucking industry for 51 years. He was a fan of his native city's St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, enjoyed visiting with friends, cooking shrimp and listening to his favorite song "Fools Rush In" ballad version 1960 by Frank Sinatra, as well as the Gaithers gospel music, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves and he loved his dog "Pee Nut."
As a young man he moved from St. Louis to Jackson, and resided with family members Jim and Verna Rhodes; it was there that he met and married Sharon Sue Smith.
Survivors include two children, U.S. Naval Officer of 22 years, Sr. Master Chief Clinton Roy Cannon, working and residing in Shanghai, China, and Charlotte Fay Cannon of Scott City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Sarah N. Cannon, Wendy A. Cannon, Chase A. Cannon and Casey C. Cannon; seven great-grandchildren; half-brothers, Bill Slavin and Vaughn Slavin; half-sister, Lorraine (Lori) Slavin; aunt, Betty Mae (Tony) Chapman of Santa Barbara, California; niece, Lisa Marie Cannon of Los Angeles; Rhodes family, favorite cousin and brother by choice, Deacon Jim (Ruth) Rhodes, Mark (Linda) Rhodes, Marilyn (Dr. D) Horseley, Jan (Wilbur) Rhodes, Ness, Carol (Joe) Adkins, Marlene (Michael) Ray, Kenneth (Susan) Rhodes and many other members of the Rhodes family; cousins on Cannon side, Carolyn Cannon, Barb Dattilo, Rick (Dana) Cannon and many other Cannon family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George M. Cannon and Ethel L. Rhodes-Slavin; sister, Margie L. Cannon of California; stepfather, Bill Slavin; Rhodes family aunts and uncles, Mary Helen (Orville) Randoll, Mildred Rhodes, Virginia Jean Rhodes, James Bert Rhodes Jr., Hubert Wilson Rhodes, William Martin Rhodes; cousin, Robert Martin (Bobby) Sr.; Cannon cousins, Donnie Cannon and Jack Cannon and his lifetime beloved best friend Roy (Shirley) Murakami of Cape Girardeau.
Visitation will be at noon and at 1 p.m. a memorial service will be held on Sept. 6, 2014, at the Lakeland Assembly of God Church in Wappapello, Highway D and north of Pisos Road with the Rev. Arvin Haynes officiating.
His children wish to send a sincere special thank you to those who took the time and made relentless efforts to care for their father, "Bud," through his tragic accident, and his last year battling cancer. To the Rhodes Family, including cousin, Jim (Ruth) Rhodes and Jan and Wilbur Ness who devoted their time, love and tender care during the course of their father's last three years of his life, and others.
