Gary Ray Wendel, 78, of Cape Girardeau and formerly of Jackson passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022.

He was born Jan. 28, 1944, in Cape Girardeau, son of Jacob T. and Edith "Allegra" Daume Wendel. He and Emilie Propst were married July 10, 1965, at Sedgewickville (Missouri) Lutheran Church.

Gary was a 1961 graduate of Jackson High School. He farmed for many years while also working at Jackson CO--OP and later at Jackson High School as a custodian. He was a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge and Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson.

Loving survivors include his wife, Emilie Wendel; grandson, Aidin Wendel; and two siblings, David (Janet) Wendel of Jackson and Jane (Richard) Malone.

Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brandon Wendel; and sister and brother-in--law, Ruth and Roger Lane.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Tuesday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Interment will follow in St. James Church of Christ Cemetery in Tilsit.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to American Diabetes Association or Alzheimer's Association.
