Gary James Monteith Sr., 81, of Burfordville passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at his home. He was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Red Bud, Illinois. His parents were Cecil and Henrietta Diebold Monteith. Gary moved to St. Louis and was a 1960 graduate of Normandy High School. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy from July 15, 1960, to Jan. 24, 1964. He and Carolyn Robison were married April 21, 1962...

Gary James Monteith Sr., 81, of Burfordville passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at his home.

He was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Red Bud, Illinois. His parents were Cecil and Henrietta Diebold Monteith.

Gary moved to St. Louis and was a 1960 graduate of Normandy High School. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy from July 15, 1960, to Jan. 24, 1964. He and Carolyn Robison were married April 21, 1962.

In 1976, Gary and Carolyn moved the family to their new home near Burfordville. He was a general contractor and owned Custom Builders. In 1985, he built The Corner Store in Burfordville with his neighbor.

Gary liked to be outdoors and loved warm weather, bass fishing, gardening and woodworking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gary was known for his willingness to help others, his vast and varied knowledge and his sense of humor. He was always faithful to Christ and was active in Cape County Cowboy Church in Gravel Hill.

To cherish his memory, Gary leaves his wife of nearly 62 years, Carolyn Monteith; two children, Kerri (Larry) Wagner of Burfordville and Scott Monteith of Marble Hill; daughter-in-law, Kim (late Jim) Monteith of Jackson; grandchildren, Britney Doyal, and her daughter, Callie, of Santa Fe, Texas; Jacob (Megan) Monteith, and their children, Haven, Asher and Rose, of Gordonville; Austin (Macy) Doyal, and their sons, Marshall and Ronan, of Jackson; and Joshua Doyal of Burfordville; a sister, Sharon (Dale) Wolyniak; and five half siblings.

Gary was preceded in death by a son, Gary James "Jim" Monteith Jr.; an infant son and his parents.

The family will host a memorial visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Cape County Cowboy Church in Gravel Hill. The Rev. Jim Matthews will conduct a life celebration ceremony starting at 4 p.m., followed by military honors.

Private inurnment will be held later at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.

If considering a memorial, the family suggests St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Cremation was entrusted to McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
