Fred W. Ossick, 78, of Marietta, Ga., died Friday, March 27, 2009.

The funeral was held March 31 at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, Ga., with Monsignor Richard Lopez officiating. Burial was in Georgia National Cemetery.

Mr. Ossick served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict; graduated from Southern Illinois University and worked for U.S. Shoe Corp. He owned Ossick Shoes in downtown Cape Girardeau during the early 1970s. Later he became owner of multiple retail shoe stores in the Atlanta metro area for 32 years.

Mr. Ossick was an avid runner and community service volunteer with the Catholic Archdiocese in Marietta.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ossick; a son, Jason (Dacia) Ossick of Marietta; two grandsons, William Elijah and Daniel Quinn Ossick of Marietta; and a sister, Jean Dasher of St. Louis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law, and friends, as well as his beloved canine assistant, Samuel.

Carmichael Funeral Home of Marietta was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family had requested contributions to Alzheimer's research or the Canine Assistants, 3160 Francis Road, Alpharetta, Ga., 30004.
