Fred "Bebop" Layne, 61, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Abbey Nursing Home in Carbondale, Ill.
He was born July 30, 1939, in Murphysboro, Ill., son of Fred and Jennie Baker Layne.
Layne attended Murphysboro High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-65, and was stationed in Berlin, Germany.
He was a telephone installer and technician for various communication companies, most recently on the SIU-Carbondale campus.
Layne was a member of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Moose and Eagles Lodges. He was a member of United Auto Workers Union and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Survivors include his wife, Jacklyn; three sons, Fred Layne of Cedar Hill, Mo., Eddie Layne of St. Louis, Brent Layne of Biloxi, Miss.; five daughters, Cindy Walsh of De Soto, Mo., Nicki Florese of Washington, D.C., Leslie and Kris Layne of Biloxi, Sydney Davis of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Richard Layne of Murphysboro; four sisters, Kay Lirely and Pamela Baskin of Murphysboro, Karen Emerson and Debi Robinson of Carbondale; and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Friends may call at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel in Murphysboro from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Elm Street Church, with Dan Schumaker and the Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.
