VILLA RIDGE, Ill. -- Floyd R. Smoot, 85, of Villa Ridge died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Daystar Nursing Care Center in Cairo, Ill.
He was born March 4, 1916, at Villa Ridge, son of George Augustus and Emma Brewster Smoot. He and Ella Dover were married April 15, 1938, in St. Louis.
Smoot served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1950s at Stone Mountain, Ga. He later became superintendent of construction for numerous facilities, including Barclay Field Airport and numerous Home Federal banks in Kentucky and Illinois, in addition to the courthouse and levee in Cairo. He served as the board chairman of Liberty Cemetery for many years. Smoot was a member of Christian Church in Pulaski, Ill., and attended Union Church in Villa Ridge.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Hogendobler of Virginia Beach, Va., and Emma Malone of Pulaski, Ill.; a sister, Bertha Lingle of Anna, Ill.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, two sisters and a brother.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Liberty Cemetery in Pulaski. The Revs. Ralph Kaufman and Joey Dunning will officiate. Randy Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
