Floyd Gene King, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, April 2, 2019, of advanced Parkinson's disease at his home.
He was born Oct. 7, 1944, in Cape Girardeau to Benjamin Arthur and Beulah Viola Lynch King. He and Linda Blaylock were married Dec. 18, 1965, in Cape Girardeau.
Floyd was a 1962 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, participating in football and baseball. He was a catcher on the 1962 state championship baseball team. His athletic skills earned him a dual scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1966 and a Master of Education in 1970.
Floyd began his teaching and coaching career at Chaffee (Missouri) High School, where he taught science and coached football and baseball. He also taught and coached in Park Hills, Missouri, in the St. Francis R-III District and then in Charleston, Missouri. Deciding to opt for a different career, he worked for E.I. DuPont Pharmaceuticals as a sales representative and Midwest trainer. Before retirement, he re-entered the educational field, teaching at the alternative school in Cape Girardeau and retiring in 2007.
He enjoyed working with youth sports and was instrumental in the formation of the Youth Tackle Football League in which he coached. He also coached Little League Baseball. He was one of the original founders of the Cape Central Athletic Booster Club. He was honored by being one of the early inductees into the Cape Central High School Hall of Fame.
Among his hobbies was playing fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. He umpired many softball games in the area.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 639, Missouri State Teachers Association and National Education Association.
Survivors include his wife, Linda King of Cape Girardeau; three sons, Travis (Brenda) King of Columbia, Missouri, Tranton King of Boulder, Colorado, and Tyson King of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Benjamin King of Jackson and Michael (Susan) King of Blue Springs, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kody (fiancee, Jessica Couch) King of Greenwood, Indiana, Hailey King of Nashua, New Hampshire, McKenna King of Columbia and London King of Denver; two great-grandchildren, Chase and Aria King of Greenwood; and sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Hank) Scarborough of Beatty, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother, George King.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Barry Winders officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
