Evelyn A. (nee Rudert) Wolfe, 95, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at the Lutheran Home, where she had been a recent resident.
She was born July 5, 1912, at Dutchtown, daughter of Benjamin G. and Caroline LaCroix Rudert. The family moved to the corner of Ellis and College streets in Cape Girardeau when she was a toddler. After graduating from Cape Girardeau Central High School, she earned her nursing diploma from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing (now St. Jude Children's Research Hospital).
A registered nurse for more than 40 years, she spent much of her career at Southeast Missouri Hospital beginning in 1932. Her greatest joy was working in obstetrics.
She and Fred Wolfe were married Dec. 24, 1936, at Benton, Mo. He preceded her in death March 7, 1975.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout the United States. Two of their favorite places were Yellowstone National Park and the state of Colorado, which they visited several times. Her husband's position with the Corps of Engineers took them to several Midwestern cities. They retired for a time in Rogers, Ark., eventually returning to the Cape Girardeau area.
A brother, Jean A. Rudert, and a sister, Kathleen E. John, also preceded her in death. She is survived by a niece, Mary Jean (Tom) Giles; two nephews, Ben (Jane) Rudert of LaCrescent, Minn., and Benjamin "Butch" (Jana) John of Louisville, Ky.; three great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, Council of Catholic Women and Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.
Friends may call from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Thomas Kiefer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Birthright, The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri or the Salvation Army.
