Evelyn Johnson

Evelyn S. Johnson, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born Feb. 5, 1919, at Poplar Bluff, Mo., daughter of Lee Roy and Myrtie Stuart Smith. She and Glenn Johnson were married Nov. 24, 1950, in Piggott, Ark. He died Jan. 12, 1973.

Johnson had been a cook at Holiday Inn and Southeast Hospital, retiring from the hospital. She was a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald May of French Village, Mo., Sam and Steve Johnson of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Sue Coomer of Scott City, Nancy Burroughs of Arnold, Mo.; a stepson, Dick Johnson of Millersville; three stepdaughters, Joann Nemeth of El Cajon, Calif., Sally Lovell of McClure, Ill., and Glennetta Houck of Cape Girardeau.

Also surviving are three sisters, Judy Dambach, Wanda Morris and Virginia Poston, all of Cape Girardeau; three brothers, Elmer and Floyd Smith of Cape Girardeau, Ray Smith of Chaffee, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, a brother and four sisters.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rennie Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
