Evelyn D. Deck (Kitchens) was born Dec. 3, 1922 to James E. Scism and Nellie Harper Scism in Ilmo, Mo. She attended College High School in Cape Girardeau.
On March 1, 1941 she married John A. Kitchens of Arkadelphia Ark., and a son was added to this union, John A. Kitchens III.
In 1950 she began her 30-year teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight in Grayspoint and Cape Girardeau County. She received her Bachelor of Science in education from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College. She received a Master of Science in education in 1959. In 1963, she began teaching fourth grade at Charbonier School in Florissant, Mo. She completed her 30 years of dedicated service in May, 1981.
After her retirement, she became a master chef on a riverboat and catered to her crews' individual needs. In 1986, she left Missouri to reside in Texas. She attended the Crosby Brethren Church and was a faithful supporter of the Christian sisters and the youth program.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a loving a dedicated son; one grandson, John A. Kitchens IV; one great-grandson, John A. Kitchens V; a brother, James Harold Scism; and several relatives, Sammi and Rambo (her faithful companions), Newport Community, and the Crosby Brethren Church.
She was loved by many and will be greatly missed, but her angelic spirit will live on in our hearts. An angel was dispatched to Heaven Aug. 4, 2001.
