Evangeline Cannell, 80, of Cape Girardeau passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at her home.

She was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Rushford, Minn., daughter of Alfred and Mabel Haarstad Bakken. She and William Cannell were married Aug. 14, 1946, in Kasson, Minn. He passed away Aug. 25, 2006.

Upon graduation from high school in 1944, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the FBI there, and in St. Louis as a telephone operator until 1949. She and Bill lived in St. Louis, Flagstaff, Ariz., Charlottesville, Va., Washington, D.C., and Walkerton, Ind., before retiring to Cape Girardeau in 2005.

Her hobbies included playing bridge, gardening, sewing and spending time with family and friends. Evangeline was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a current member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Loving survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and David Jordan of Cape Girardeau; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Marian Cannell of Chapel Hill, N.C., Curtis and Pamela Cannell of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Jordan of Colorado Springs, Colo., Monica Jordan of Cape Girardeau, Colin, Evan, Rowan and Brendan Cannell of Chapel Hill, Garrett Cannell of Fort Worth; three brothers, David (Karen) Bakken of Rochester, Minn., Donald (Avonne) Bakken of Cannon Falls, Minn., and Allwyn (Shirley) Bakken of Rochester; two sisters, Dorothy (Don) Morgan of Morristown, Minn., Elvira Bakken of McQueeney, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Jim Long of Zamora, Calif., Arvid Boyum of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Pat Bakken of Wykoff, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Everett Bakken; three sisters, Arlida Long, Mildred "Billie" Croll and Ruth Boyum.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, Minn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
