GLEN ALLEN, Mo. -- Ethel E. Whitener, 96, of St. Louis died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Louis. She was born March 1, 1904, near Glen Allen, daughter of William F. and Nellie Goodson Underwood. She and John Whitener were married in 1924 in St. Louis. He died Dec. 1, 1971...

GLEN ALLEN, Mo. -- Ethel E. Whitener, 96, of St. Louis died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Louis.

She was born March 1, 1904, near Glen Allen, daughter of William F. and Nellie Goodson Underwood. She and John Whitener were married in 1924 in St. Louis. He died Dec. 1, 1971.

Whitener was a baker at Pope Cafeteria in St. Louis.

Survivors include two sons, John Whitener Jr. of Ozark, Ala., James Whitener of St. Louis; a sister, Dell Smith of Marble Hill, Mo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, a brother, two sisters and a granddaughter.

Friends may call at Old Trace Creek Baptist Church near Glen Allen after 11 a.m. Friday.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. John Whitener III officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Liley Funeral Home at Marble Hill is in charge of arrangements.
