EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Etchel Matthews, 76, of East Prairie died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis.
He was born June 4, 1926, at Bertrand, Mo., son of Lee and Emma Heath Matthews. He and Marcella Thompson were married Aug. 11, 1950, in St. Louis.
Matthews moved to the Dogwood community in 1987 from St. Louis. He retired as a truck driver with Jeffco Steel Co. in St. Louis.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary Matthews of Petty Jean Mountain, Ark.; two sisters, Betty Bradley of the Dogwood community, and Pauline Duke of Sikeston, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Roseann Allen-Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Dogwood Cemetery.
