BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Elvis Alexander Mooney Sr., son of the late Alexander and Eva Elisa "Evie" Edwards Mooney, was born in Bloomfield May 10, 1911. He passed away at Cypress Point Health Care in Dexter, Mo., Monday, March 16, 2009, at age 97.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, Joseph Mooney, all of Bloomfield.

He was married to Edna Lois Evans on Nov. 10, 1941. They had two children whom they raised in Bloomfield. His wife preceded him in death Dec. 3, 1995.

Mr. Mooney is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Mooney Skelton (Bob); a son, Elvis Alexander "Chip" Mooney (Gina); and a grandson, Robert Alexander Barney, all of Bloomfield.

Mr. Mooney received his formal education in the Bloomfield School System. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College and attained his juris doctorate in law at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a teacher, principal and superintendent of Bloomfield Schools.

During World War II he served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy. His main naval postings were at sea in the Pacific Theater.

Upon return, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives and later as prosecuting attorney of Stoddard County.

He was often involved deeply in civic affairs to include the Missouri State Banking Commission and Board of Regents of Southeast Missouri State University.

For more than 70 years he was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 385. He was a member of Bloomfield Masonic Lodge 153 attaining the honorary 33rd Degree Mason and served as grand master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. He was the oldest member of the Harry S. Truman line of grand masters.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield.

Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
