Elsie Gaden Sterling, 82, 1105 S. Ranney, died Friday, Dec. 8, 1995, at the Lutheran Home.
She was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Coosa County, Ala., daughter of William and Pauline Slaughter Temple. She first married Herbert Gaden, who died in 1969. She later married Jessie Sterling, who died in 1988.
Sterling was a former director of the Civic Center and Head Start. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, its Missionary Society and a senior deacon.
She was also a member of Church Women United, Eastern Star, Golden Age Senior Citizens, Successful Homemakers, Civic Center Board, Professional Women's Club and Republican Women.
Survivors include a stepson, Howard Sterling of Los Angeles, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Lucrisa Thomas of Cape Girardeau, Jeritha Leach and Genevieve Johnson of Pomona, Calif.; three sisters, Thelma Fielder of Hammond, Ind., Annie Williams of Cape Girardeau, and Lygia Whitelaw of Joliet, Ill.
Friends may call at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Friday.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Bethel Church, with the Revs. Roy Nabors and Johnny Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
