CAIRO, Ill. -- Graveside service for Ellis Jewell Sanderson of Tucson, Ariz., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Cairo City Cemetery in Villa Ridge. The Rev. Kelly Cox will officiate.
Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.
Sanderson, 81, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, in Tucson.
He was born in 1917 in Cairo, son of Jewell and Lucille Roberts Sanderson. He and Kay Vincent were married in 1946. She died in 1990.
Sanderson was a graduate of the University of Illinois-Champaign. He had been an insurance agent in Illinois and Arizona.
He was a B-17 pilot with the U.S. Air Force in England. He was shot down over France and became a German prisoner of war. He received a Purple Heart.
Survivors include a son, Robert Sanderson of St. Louis; three daughters, Sally Remington, Margaret Harding and Susan L'Heureux of Tucson; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
