CHARLESTON -- Edward W. Barrett, 82, of Charleston died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born May 26, 1914, at Vicksburg, Miss., son of Walter and Sarah Crayton Barrett. He and Dorothy Louise Dilworth were married Dec. 13, 1941. She survives.
Barrett was a veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant.
He was a schoolteacher in Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois and had taught in the Cairo School District for 20 years. He retired in 1983.
He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, the Alpha Phi fraternity, Ten Tall Ones Civic Organization, NAACP, Boy Scouts of America, American Legion Post 0232 in Charleston, Selective Service Board.
Survivors include a brother, Jathan Barrett Sr. of Lillington, N.C.; and a niece, Dorothy Williams of Maywood, Ill., whom he raised, and other nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at The Shiloh Baptist Church in Charleston. The family hour will be between 7 and 8, with the funeral at 8 o'clock.
Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the National Cemetery at Mound City, Ill.
