SIKESTON, Mo. -- Edward E. Smith, 78, of Sikeston died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn.
He was born Aug. 23, 1922, at Wyatt, Mo., son of Ervin and Virgie Brown Smith. He and Carrie Mae Clinton were married Oct. 19, 1940, in Charleston, Mo.
He served in the 41st Infantry of the Army during World War II. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post No. 114 in Sikeston and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3319 in Sikeston. He was the district maintenance clerk for the Missouri Highway Patrol from 1946 until retirement in 1988.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Judy Hobbs and Pat Taylor, both of Sikeston; two brothers, Raymond Smith of Moore, Okla., and Floyd Smith of Granite City, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Wylds of Granite City and Gladys Holmes of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jim Guffie will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors performed by the Missouri Military Honor Guard Unit of Cape Girardeau.
