Edward Schwent Jr.

Edward A. Schwent Jr., 75, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Mo.

He was born Feb. 15, 1933, in St. Francois County, son of Edward A. and Bertha Link Schwent. He and Rosemarie Schwab were married Dec. 17, 1955, in Flat River, Mo.

Ed was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and proudly served two years. He also served six years in the Army Reserve.

He was employed 34 years with Procter & Gamble, working in Cincinnati, Ohio, Cheboygan, Mich., and Cape Girardeau before retiring in 1993.

Ed was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, where he had served as president of the congregation, an elder, Stephen minister, Christ Care group and member of the Thursday morning Men's Bible Study.

Ed was involved in coaching Little League baseball and AAU basketball, SEMO Boosters and was a member of Kimbeland Golf Course, serving on the board of directors and chairman of the annual fishing derby for many years. He also served as a marshal at Bent Creek Golf Course.

An accomplished golfer, Ed had nine holes-in-one in his lifetime.

Loving survivors include Rosemarie, his wife of 53 years; a son, Edward A. Schwent III (Karen) of St. Louis; a daughter, Jana Gessert and grandson Conner Schwent Gessert of St. Charles, Mo.; two sisters, Alice Ruth Neckermann (George) of Park Hills, Mo., Laura Dalton (Robert) of Columbia, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Fred A. Schwab (Polly) of Farmington, Mo.; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Fred and Marie Schwab; a sister, Maxine Hopkins; and a grandson, Edward A. Schwent IV.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Burial will be in St. Francois Memorial Park Cemetery at Bonne Terre, Mo.

Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
