Edward Grebing

Edward Martin Grebing, 80, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born Dec. 18, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, son of Oscar and Edna Hilpert Grebing.

He and Dorothy Niswonger were married May 1, 1949, at Grace Methodist Church.

A lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau, he attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Central High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a radioman.

He was an automobile mechanic, and then worked at the Cape Girardeau Post Officer 38 years as a letter carrier and in vehicle operations and maintenance, retiring in 1985. For a number of years he had a radio and TV repair business as a sideline.

He was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and was a longtime member of the choir. He served as an elder, member of the board of directors, was a Stephen minister, Christ Care leader, and on many other boards over the years.

He was a member of VFW Post 3838, and a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Grebing was a proud father and caring husband with such diverse hobbies as poetry, music, woodworking, stained glass and engine repair. Ed was well known around the area for his musical performances at the Little Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall and other places. He also enjoyed entertaining with his poetry, often written to commemorate post office retirements, anniversaries and other special occasions.

He enjoyed getting together with his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Keith, Aug. 2, 1967.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Grebing of Cape Girardeau; a son, James Grebing and daughter-in-law Debra of Hermann, Mo., a daughter, Martha Windeknecht and son-in-law Randy of Jackson, a son, the Rev. Terry Grebing and daughter-in-law Diane of Bunker Hill, Ill., a daughter, Cathy Grebing of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Ron Grebing and wife Ann of Apex, N.C.; a sister, Marilyn Dippold and brother-in-law Richard of Cape Girardeau; four grandsons: Joshua Windeknecht of Jackson, Nathan Windeknecht of St. Louis, Jarrod Grebing of Hermann, and Eric Grebing, a student in Cambridge, Mass.; 10 nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park with full military rites by Missouri Honor Team.
