Edna Burton Hipps, 90, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Cairo, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, at her home.
She was born April 26, 1928, in Mound City, Illinois, to John and Hattie Marrs. In 1947, she married Morgan Burton. He preceded her in death. On Sept. 18, 1964, she married James A. Hipps. He died March 18, 1995, in Cairo.
Edna lived in Cairo most of her life. She was a wife, mother and member of First Southern Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. She and her sister, Bertha Grigsby, would often sing duets together.
Edna was an inspector at M. Snower and Co. in Cairo for several years.
She loved to bake and try new recipes and share them with friends. One of her favorite activities in Cairo was meeting her friends at Shemwell's BBQ for coffee and conversation every afternoon. It was the highlight of her day, and their laughter could be heard outside the doors.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Burton (Charles) Thomas of Thebes, Illinois, and Sharon Burton (the late Joe) Manker of Fruitland; three granddaughters, Sherry (Sean) Pecord of Miller City, Illinois, Jennifer (James) Weber of High Ridge, Missouri, and Alicia (Jacob) Loveless of Jackson; a great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Brown of Miller City; five great-grandsons, Tyler and Braden of High Ridge and Jacob, Colton and Blake of Jackson; and a brother, Carl Marrs of Rockdale, Texas. Numerous loving nieces and nephews also survive. Aunt Edna was a favorite to them.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Jackie Lee Burton; four brothers, Orville, Albert, Frank and Ernest Marrs; four sisters, Christena Duncan, Juanita Talley, Bertha Grigsby and Florence Vaughn; and her fur baby of 15 years, Muffin.
There will be no visitation. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
