Edith Hastings

Edith Knight Hastings, 103, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born March 11, 1906, in the Dogwood Community of East Prairie, Mo., daughter of James and Mary Etta "Lettie" Johnson Baker.

Edith graduated from East Prairie High School in 1925. She married George R. Knight in June 1925. He died in January 1967. During their marriage they lived in Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, where he worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad. Edith later married Mack Hastings in February 1980. They lived in Ballwin, Mo., until his death, when she moved into the Ridgecrest Retirement home in Ballwin, where she lived several years until moving to the Lutheran Home in 2002. She was a member of the Ellisville, Mo., Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Levi Ham of Kelso, Mo.; three grandchildren, Peggy Tucker and husband James of O'Fallon, Mo., Craig Knight and wife Teresa of Connecticut, Scott Knight and wife Margaret of New Jersey; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Knight of New Jersey; two great-granddaughters, Erin King and husband Matthew of Florissant, Mo., Ryan Knight of New Jersey; five great-grandsons, Justin Tucker of Las Vegas, Garrett, Conner and Chad Knight of Connecticut, Colin Knight of New Jersey; a niece and nephew, Ruedell Gilberson and Steve Karr.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, G.R. Knight; three brothers, Vernon, Richard and Thurman Baker; two sisters, Geneva Zimmer and Audrey Woodward; eight nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cape County Memorial Park. Dr. Robert Herring, pastor of Illmo Baptist Church, will officiate.

Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City is in charge of arrangements.
