Dr. Leeman Phillips "Phil" Maxwell, 59, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Son of Leeman M. and Lenora J. Phillips Maxwell, he was born Dec. 31, 1949, in Clarksburg, W.Va. He was first married to Lou Ann Gum, who died in 1996. He married Linda DeJong on May 16, 1997, in Mesa, Ariz.

Dr. Maxwell joined Cardiovascular Consultants in 2004 as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, certified in the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease with added qualifications in interventional cardiology.

He was also a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Previously, Dr. Maxwell served as associate clinical professor of medicine and cardiology at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, and East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, N.C.

While a resident of Morgantown, Dr. Maxwell was medical director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories of the Ruby Memorial Hospital of Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University. During this time, Dr. Maxwell was an adjunct assistant professor and associate member of the Graduate Facility of West Virginia University School of Physical Education.

Dr. Maxwell was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the American College of Physicians. He was a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and Society for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.

He was chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee for both Southeast Missouri Hospital and Saint Francis Medical Center. He was a recipient of the 2009 American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award with commendation.

He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Maxwell of Cape Girardeau; his mother, Lenora Jean Maxwell of Salem, W.Va.; three brothers, Joseph (Angie) Maxwell of Clarksburg, Dr. Steven (Pam) Maxwell and Charles (Peggy) of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leeman Mason Maxwell, and a nephew, Leeman Joseph Maxwell.

Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. to service time Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tom Kiefer officiating.
