Dr. Leeman P. Maxwell, 59, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 31, 1949, in Salem, W.Va., son of Leeman and Lenora Phillips Maxwell. He first married Louann Gum. She died in 1995. He later married Linda DeJong May 17, 1997, in Mesa, Ariz.
Dr. Maxwell originally joined Cardiovascular Consultants in 2004. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, certified in the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease with added qualifications in interventional cardiology. Dr. Maxwell was also a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Previously, Dr. Maxwell served as associate clinical professor of medicine and cardiology at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, and also East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, N.C.
While at West Virginia University, Dr. Maxwell was medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories of the Ruby Memorial Hospital of Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University. Also, during this time, Dr. Maxwell was an adjunct assistant professor and associate member of the Graduate Facility of West Virginia University School of Physical Education.
Dr. Maxwell was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the American College of Physicians. He was also a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and Society for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Dr. Maxwell was chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee for both Southeast Missouri Hospital and Saint Francis Medical Center. He received the Physician Recognition Award with commendation by the American Medical Association in 2009.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Maxwell of Cape Girardeau; his mother of Salem; three brothers, Joe (Angie) Maxwell of Clarksburg, W.Va., Dr. Stephen (Pam) Maxwell and Charles (Peggy) Maxwell of Morgantown.
He was preceded in death by his father.
