Dr. Edwin C. Brasington, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998 in Cape Girardeau, MO.He was born March 3, 1921 in Bennettsville, S.C., son of Charles and Gladys Brasington. He and Ricki Holden were married Sept. 1, 1945 in Binghamton, N.Y.A graduate of Columbia Seminary in Decatur, GA he did his graduate work at Union Seminary in Richmond, VA. Dr. Brasington came to Cape in 1968 and he retired in 1986 from the First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau and assumed Pastor Emeritus status with retirement.
During his forty year ministry in the Presbyterian Church he served as pastor in Okolona MS, Leland, MS and First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. Active in many areas of the Church he chaired many committees at Presbytery Synod and General Assembly levels, and as Modcrator of all Presbyteries and Synods of which he was a member. He was recognized particularly for his contributions in youth and older adult ministry. The establishment of Chateau Girardeau Retirement Center in Cape Girardeau had its beginning in Cape Girardeau during his ministry at First Presbyterian Church.
Active in the work of Southeast Missouri Hospital for 27 years he was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award in 1997.
A Rotarian for 47 years he had been honored by the Downtown Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He had perfect attendance in Rotary for 47 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Survivors include his wife, a son, Leigh of Alameda, CA, a daughter, Anne Waldrup of Pope, MS and a foster son, Don Stewart of Corpus Christi, TX, a brother, William Brasington of Denmark, SC and a sister Ann Calhoun of Bennettsville, SC.Graveside service will be held Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville, MS. Dickens Funeral Home of Batesville, MS is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at Cape Girardeau First Presbyterian Church Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Officiating will be Dr. Thomas Bass and Rev. Brendan Dempsey.
Memorials are to be made to Southeast Missouri Hospital, First Presbyterian Church or Chateau Girardeau.
Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau handled the arrangements. There will be no visitation.
