Dr. Donnell D. Etzwiler, 76, of Bloomington, Minn., passed away Sunday, April 6, 2003, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Don is the son-in-law of Lela Brown of Advance, Mo., and grandson-in-law of Dora Morgan of Zalma, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, the Rev. Jack Brown.

Don is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Dr. Lisa Etzwiler (Dr. Randall Clary) of St. Louis, Nancy Etzwiler (Daniel O'Neill), Diane Etzwiler (Robert Thallon), and David Etzwiler (Sarah Truesdell); and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 19th and Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minn. A reception will follow.

Don was a pediatric diabetologist. He was founder and president (1967-1997) of the International Diabetes Center, a World Health Organization collaborating center based in Minneapolis; president of the American Diabetes Association (1976-77); and fellow of National Academy of Sciences.

He was a U.S. Congress appointed commissioner on the National Commission on Diabetes; awarded the Russian Peace Prize for his years work in improving health care delivery systems in Russia and the former Soviet Union.

Don published over 200 articles, book chapters and books, and received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine (1953) and bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Indiana University (1950).

Memorials in lieu of flowers preferred to either Donnell Etzwiler International Scholars Training Program, International Diabetes Center, Park Nicollet, 3800 Park Nicollet Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minn., 55416, or American Diabetes Association, Dr. Donnell Etzwiler Camp Needlepoint Fund, attention: Becky Martin, 715 Florida Avenue South, Suite 307, Minneapolis, Minn., 55426.

The Cremation Society of Minnesota in Edina was in charge of arrangements.
