Dorthylyn Jane Evans, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Southeast Hospital.
She was born Dec. 29, 1939, in Electra, Texas, daughter of the Rev. Aurelius Ottomar and Helene Clara Kunkel Kaltwasser. She and William Clark Evans were married Dec. 25, 1960, in Altenburg, Missouri.
Dorthy graduated from Perryville (Missouri) High School in 1957, and from Southeast Missouri State University in 1960, where she was also a member of the Golden Eagles Marching Band and Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She received a master's degree in education from Southeast in 1973. She was a member of Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Dorthy began her career in education in the Fox School District in Arnold, Missouri. She continued with Cape Girardeau public schools as music teacher at May Greene, Washington and Jefferson schools, then as third-grade teacher at Jefferson. She retired in 2001, going on to work part-time at the Show Me Center and the University Bookstore.
She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel, and part-time organist and member of the Ladies Guild.
Dorthy journeyed to Israel to experience firsthand the places where Jesus walked and died, which served to expand her understanding of biblical history and to strengthen the roots that anchored her strong Christian faith.
Survivors include two sons, William David Evans and Michael Clark (Sheila) Evans of Cape Girardeau; two granddaughters, Brooke Anne and Amanda Mae Evans of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Jeanell J. (James) Peek of Englewood, Florida, and Lanette R. (the Rev. Earl) Schmidt of Port Charlotte, Florida; and a brother, Wayne A. Kaltwasser of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 46 years; and a sister, Mary Dell Kaltwasser.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Barry Pfanstiel officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
The family wishes to express thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the Southeast Cancer Center, Siteman Cancer Center and Southeast Hospital for their care and compassion through this past year.
